In 2015 WNT’s Claude Sun and Tony Pennington completed the Coast to Coast cycle challenge for the third and fourth time respectively, vowing that it was the last time they would take on this gruelling challenge. Jumping forward to 2017 they were once again at the starting point of St Bees on the west coast of England, about to embark once more on the journey to Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast, this time they would be accompanied by an enthusiastic group of WNT managing directors from nine different countries across Europe.
The team gave up their free time for this five-day ‘ride’ on what has become a world famous mountain bike challenge following the route of Wainwright’s Walk across the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales & North Yorkshire Moors, a distance of 220 miles. Along the way the intrepid group would face some of the hardest terrain the north of England has to offer, but it was all in aid of good causes with WNT’s chosen charities of the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK benefiting from the pledge of £1.00 for every mile covered. With everyone surviving the five days of intense riding, bike carrying and climbing to reach their destination, covering a combined total of 1980 miles (3186 km), in addition to an astonishing 209,692 feet (63,914 metres) of ascending, meaning the charities will share £1980 between them.
“The fact that this group took a week of their own time to take on this challenge and help raise money for these charities speaks volumes of the team and fighting spirit that runs through WNT. In the face of some of the worse conditions the UK weather threw at us, we all completed the journey with smiles on our faces,” Claude Sun, Business Unit Manager WNT.
