Rating: particularly innovative! The S-Cut from WNT is much more powerful yet uses less energy and was therefore the deserved winner of the 2016 Hans-Jürgen Warnecke Innova-tion Prize.

The S-Cut from WNT wows the judges of the 24th Innovation Day and wins the 2016 Innovation Prize

At the 24th Innovation Day on 9th December, the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) once again awarded the Hans-Jürgen Warnecke Innovation Prize. An end mill with a cutting edge geometry that uses less energy while achieving higher performance levels emerged as the leading contender this year: the S-Cut from WNT!

As 80% of small and medium-sized metal machining enterprises use solid carbide milling cutters, developers always attach great importance to optimising these tools. This is also the case for the S-Cut from WNT, which was developed in collaboration with the Fraunhofer IPA. Developers have succeeded in optimising this milling cutter so much that it now boasts an extra 25% performance while using 17% less energy.

The first step in developing the milling cutter was to analyse the forces acting upon the tool during everyday milling tasks. Simulations and experimental investigations were then carried out to develop the optimal cutting edge geometry. "The analyses showed that a three-dimensional geometry with a differential helix angle and specially prepared cutting edges significantly increases efficiency," explains Project Manager Dr Hans-Henrik Westermann. Subsequent laboratory tests and extensive field testing confirm the success of the innovative cutting edge geometry, which results in considerable improvements in cutting performance – compared to conventional end mills, not only does the S-Cut use 17% less energy, but cutting speeds are also increased by 10% and the feed rate by a huge 25%. The S-Cut also boasts significantly improved wear resistance and amazing stamina in terms of its service life.

"Our customers always have high expectations when it comes to high-performance, innovative tools. That's why we are all the more delighted to offer another performance tool in the form of the S-Cut that fully satisfies these requirements," emphasises Andreas Kordwig, Head of Product Management at WNT. "Winning the Hans-Jürgen Warnecke Innovation Prize is an impressive confirmation of this."

The patent-pending S-Cut is available exclusively from WNT. Its universal application options for machining steel and stainless materials make it an indispensable tool for applications that demand a long service life and high-quality machining.
