Economical Shoulder milling solutions for Stub Axle from WNT

WNT application engineer Hitesh Singh helped to optimize machining processes and could develop a strong trust of the customer to WNT.

In continuation with earlier news from January 18th, the same manufacturer of a stub axle & knuckle for commercial vehicles was using indexable inserts from a competitor for a shoulder milling operation however he was looking for an alternatively more economical solution.

After our application engineer had a close look at the existing process, he was already able to plan how to reduce the tool cost per part. The customer had been using cutting inserts with SDMT12… shaped positive inserts with 4 cutting edges, with a cutting depth limited to 4-5mm, in which WNT application engineers suggested to use SNHU1205… inserts with 8 usable cutting edges. Thanks to the special design of our MaxiMill 491 milling cutter for low cutting force generation while machining as well as stable indexable insert system and improved Dragonskin for milling grade coating tool performed excellent in machining High Alloyed steel material with optimum flank wear.

With our solution, Cost per component reduced by more than 60% and increased process reliability could be achieved. Our customer was over-whelmed and amazed by the savings in tool cost per part and has developed a strong sense of trust because of the consistent solutions provided by WNT.
