With the first phase of recruitment to WNT (UK)’s applications engineering team now complete, customers are already seeing the benefits of this applications-led approach from the Sheffield-based tooling specialist. The team has been created to add even greater value to the, already, industry leading customer support available from WNT (UK).
The initial team of four applications engineers will provide support for the technical sales team by working with customers on specific projects. This increased support will mean that customers gain from the expertise of these highly experienced engineers on a project by project basis. A further advantage is, depending on the project, the application team can take projects off-site and develop machining strategies at WNT’s technical centre in Sheffield. This eliminates the problem of tying up expensive production machining capacity at the customer, who will be presented with a fully developed strategy once the project is complete.
Two recent applications-based projects that have been developed by WNT have seen cycle times dramatically reduced, one case the cycle time for an aluminium components was cut from 2.5 hours per part to 35 minutes by creative use of workholding and the latest cutting tool technology. In a second application on hardened stainless steel a 4.5 hour cycle time was cut to 1.5 hours through use of solid carbide tooling and new milling strategies. It is not all about saving time, though, Veldon Engineering benefitted from WNT’s applications expertise, cutting its monthly tooling spend on one particular cutter from £9000 per month to less than a third of that.
“The addition of this Applications Engineering team will had significantly to the support that WNT can provide for its customers. We are already seeing these benefits being delivered, with two examples of where we have taken projects into our technical centre delivering significant cycle time savings and productivity gains. While the team is relatively new, the initial success has confirmed our thoughts that this is a positive addition to the customer service we provide and we will be expanding on this by adding more applications engineers in the coming months to give even greater coverage,” says Tony Pennington, Managing Director, WNT (UK).
The Applications team will provide cover for the entire UK with the current team being Shane O’Donnell, who will support customers in Ireland and Scotland; Billy Poore (Northern Eng-land); Steve Warner (The Midlands); and Vince Whitham (Southern England).
