High speed action with local racer taking the honours

The roads of Sheffield city centre burst into life on the 18th July when the elite of British criterium racing rode competed in the WNT Sheffield Grand Prix. Teams including the British Cycling team, JLT Condor and Team Wiggins, were taking part around the 1.4 km circuit of the city centre. Speeds up to 50 km/hour were reached with the fastest lap being set at 1 min 43 seconds.

Sponsoring the race gave customers of WNT, including a delegation from the Advanced Manufacturing and research Centre, the opportunity to savour the atmosphere from the comfort of the VIP area, while soaking up the atmosphere generated by over 8000 spectators that lined the course. “The whole evening was a great event, the atmosphere was buzzing in and around the WNT V.I.P enclosure, and it was a fantastic opportunity give some exposure to the Ceratizit and WNT brands in what has been its UK home for over 20 years,” says Dan Atkinson, WNT’s Sales/Event co-ordinator.

Fittingly, the race was won by Sheffield’s own Joey Walker from Team Wiggins, who broke away from the field with three laps to go of the one-hour race to take a storming victory in front of his home crowd. Joey was joined on the podium for the traditional spraying of champagne by Jon Mould of team JLT Condor, and Toby Horton of team Madison Genesis who were second and third respectively. The WNT Sheffield Grand Prix is part of a national series of six city centre races that pit elite cyclists and their teams against each other during June and July. With two rounds to go the series is currently led by Team JLT Condor’s Matt Gibson, whose team also leads the team classification.

“To get involved with the National Circuit Series and especially in our home city was a special occasion. Cycling is a passion for many of our employees and the spirit of endeavour and teamwork runs through the entire organisation,” says Tony Pennington Managing Director, UK & Ireland.
